KW 07 February 2018
As I am writing this email, I am sitting on a sofa in a coffee shop in the CNX Airport Terminal. I’m drinking a hot chocolate and think about the past 4 months that I have enjoyed here. It’s been an experience. The longest time I have spent in a country outside of Germany ever. A lot of meetups, inspiring humans, and learnings.
By now I am happy to leave - you’ll get to know one of the reasons below. But now I am excited about a new chapter. A new country and city (Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia), new people, new apartments, new projects, and new experiences all around.
Where did you travel last and what country should I explore? I am always looking for suggestions.
Now, here are the 4 What’s:
What I am reading: Derek Sivers and his About Page
Last year Derek Sivers inspired the Now Page and since then I have one as well. He’s been quiet over the past year for a bit, but now he’s getting back out there and started by finally releasing an About Page about his life and a so to say manifesto. I think his life story up to this point inspires to be different. It motivates to be who you are and stay true to it. His blog is also phenomenal!
In addition to his articles, his book notes are gold nuggets of information! I just recently read the Stoic Joy notes and got so much out of it. Be careful, he has been publishing for over 10 years, so it’s easy to get sucked into the wealth of content he has available - but you can relax, the time would surely not be wasted.
What I am doing: Waking Up between 5:30 and 6:00 AM
It’s always been a desire of mine to shift towards early mornings and this week was a restart of that habit. I usually fall into the night owl category. Staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning working on projects. I always admired the 4:30 that Jocko Willink is doing, but I was never able to pull off anything close to that.
This week I consistently woke up between 5:30 and 6:00 AM. It’s been a blast. I worked out, read, meditated, and worked - all before the time I usually woke up!
I am looking forward to keeping this habit consistent. It’s such a pleasure to be done with work and still have daytime left! More updates about this in the future - for now, I am still training my body to get used to those early hours.
What I published: Sometimes Not the Boss
I recently wondered: is it reliable if I am my own boss? Wouldn’t it be helpful if there were someone else, external motivation, someone I have to be accountable to?
What I am listening: Einaudi - In A Time Lapse
Nimman in Chiang Mai is a great area to stay as a Digital Nomad. It’s located with all the conveniences in walking distance (Co-Working Space, Food, Nature within reach). But it’s also deafening. That intense noise floor is crazy.
The result for me was that I started to listen to way calmer music. No more crazy dubstep, rap, or rock. I turned to the classics so to say. And I rediscovered the amazing pianist and composer Ludovico Einaudi and his arrangements who I was introduced to by Julia aka. Chicchoolee.
In the past two weeks, I listened to two arrangements (linked below). The original when I needed absolute calm and the remixes were great for when I needed a little more base.
